I was born on the New Hampshire seacoast where I still live. My study of art began as a boy observing plein air painters setting up their easels above the rocky shore. In college I calmed myself, as a respite from engineering classes, with visits to the university art museum. I learned of Le Corbusier’s amazing chapel at Ronchamp, and have recently fulfilled a dream of visiting it.
In the ‘80s, I learned some architectural design from Jim Somes, apprenticed in period woodworking with Dave Adams and Buzzy Dodge, and studied sculpture with Gary Haven Smith. I designed and built a timber frame house using lumber from my trees. As a League of NH Craftsmen woodworker, I received Best in Show at the Sunapee Fair’s Living with Crafts exhibit. My sculptures were part of a three-person show of art by League craftspeople. NH Public Television featured my work in their Spring Auction. I began to add paint, gold leaf, and pigments to my furniture. Color!
In the ‘90s and ‘00s, my middle school science students and I observed and drew from nature in regular assignments.
Over the last decade I have begun to paint in oil, with schooling from Gail Sauter, Nella Lush, and Tom Glover.
